Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese form of competitive wrestling where two wrestlers, known as rikishi, face off in a circular ring called a dohyo. The objective is to force the opponent out of the ring or to make any part of their body other than the soles of their feet touch the ground. Sumo wrestling is steeped in cultural and spiritual significance, incorporating rituals and ceremonies, such as the symbolic purification of the ring with salt and the performance of various pre-match practices that showcase the wrestlers’ skills. The sport is characterized by its unique techniques, including shoving, throwing, and grappling. Wrestlers wear a mawashi, a heavy belt made of fabric, and they are categorized into different ranks, the highest being yokozuna. Sumo wrestling not only serves as a sport but also embodies aspects of Japanese tradition, aesthetics, and discipline.
