Basketball

Basketball is a team sport in which two teams, typically consisting of five players each, compete to score points by shooting a ball through the opposing team’s hoop, which is elevated ten feet above the ground. The game is played on a rectangular court with a hoop at each end. Points are awarded for field goals made from different areas on the court, with shots made from beyond the three-point line earning more points than those taken from inside it.

Players can advance the ball by dribbling, which involves bouncing the ball while moving, or by passing it to teammates. The objective is to outscore the opponent within a set time period, which is divided into quarters or halves, depending on the league. Basketball emphasizes teamwork, strategy, and individual skills such as dribbling, shooting, and defending.

The sport originated in the United States in the late 19th century and has grown to become one of the most popular sports globally, with professional leagues, such as the NBA, drawing major international audiences. Basketball is known for its fast pace, high scoring, and the athleticism required by its players.
