Sumo Wrestling

Sumo wrestling is a traditional Japanese sport and form of competitive martial arts in which two wrestlers (rikishi) face off in a circular ring (dohyō) with the objective of forcing one another out of the ring or making any part of the opponent’s body other than the soles of their feet touch the ground. Sumo has a rich cultural heritage, characterized by its rituals, ceremonial elements, and the distinctive appearance of the wrestlers, who often wear a mawashi, a thick belt. The sport is steeped in history and tradition, dating back centuries, and it is governed by strict rules and rankings. Sumo wrestling is not only a physical contest but also an expression of discipline, respect, and strength. Wrestlers train rigorously and may achieve various ranks, with the highest being Yokozuna. The sport is celebrated in Japan and has gained international recognition, featuring tournaments throughout the year that attract large audiences, both in-person and via broadcasts.
